What Is Paleo

A paleo diet is a regimen of eating foods that the paleolithic man ate before the start of the agricultural revolution.  This consists of lean proteins (beef, seafood, poultry, buffalo, etc.), vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and healthy fats.  Ideally, meats shouldn’t be commercially raised (think grass fed beef, wild caught seafood and pastured poultry and pork), as local as possible and vegetables and fruit should be in season.

What does that not include? Grains (wheat, rice, corn, oats, quinoa, etc.), sugar, alcohol, dairy, legumes (all beans and peanuts) and processed foods (fast food, protein bars, chips, cereal, and a lot of what’s in the center aisles of the grocery store.)

Why eat paleo?  Simply put, grains, dairy, sugar and calorie dense/nutritionally lacking processed foods cause inflammation in your body.  This happens in your joints, muscles and organs and potentially leads to an autoimmune response causing things like: diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, obesity, lupus, hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome… the list goes on.  Getting away from commercially produced food and focusing on fresher ingredients, local seasonal produce and healthy fats can benefit everyone, no matter the shape, size or age.

Paleo can be easier when you try not to focus on what you can’t have- but instead focus on all of the great foods you can have, and lots of.  That’s where Gourmaleo comes in: whether you’re supplementing your paleo routine with extra meals or trying paleo for the first time, we’re happy to make it convenient and gourmet.
